Associate Professor Afam Okoye is researcher at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute and the Division of Pathobiology and Immunology, Oregon National Primate Research Center, Oregon Health & Science University. 

 

He holds a Bachelors degree in Microbiology from University of Nigeria and a Master in Biotechnology from Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom. He received his PhD. from the University of Glasgow studying papillomavirus capsid proteins under the mentorship of Prof. Saveria Campo. He subsequently moved to the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) at Oregon Health and Science University in 2004 first as a Postdoctoral fellow and then as a Staff Scientist. Afam joined the faculty of the VGTI in 2013 as an Assistant Scientist.

Associate Professor Okoye's research focuses on utilizing nonhuman primate models to understand the barriers to HIV eradication during antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to develop therapeutic approaches aimed at achieving durable remission from virus replication after ART withdrawal.

 

Associate Professor Okoye co-leads DARE RF2 with Professor Louis Picker.
